What Are The Best Face Masks to Wear When Flying?

There is a lot of misinformation online regarding which masks offer the best protection when flying, potentially putting vulnerable people at risk. This has led to guides for face masks being created by the airlines to try and help to reduce the levels of transmission.

Although the legal requirement to wear a face covering in public ended last year in the UK, all airlines currently still require masks to be worn whilst on board to reduce the spread of COVID-19 with many airlines requesting that non-valved masks are worn to a minimum certification of an FFP2 mask. This is because there remain a number of popular travel destinations that do not allow cloth face coverings to be worn, including Austria, Germany, Italy and France, due to the little resistance in reducing transmissions.

Although most aircraft are fitted with high level filters that clear 99.97% of airborne contaminants, air is still exhaled by passengers prior to being filtered. If you therefore require respiratory protection because of a health condition, or even if you just want to be properly protected, it is important that you wear a protective mask at FFP3 level.

Whilst FFP2 masks do offer a level of protection, they provide an insufficient level of filtration for viruses due to their small size. However, an FFP3 mask will provide the maximum level of protection against COVID and other viruses with the highest level of filtration.
