When we go to work it’s important that we feel safe. RPE is an important part of maintaining health and safety in the workplace. There are so many different types of face mask available, that knowing which one is best for the task at hand can feel overwhelming.
FFP2 masks are the European equivalent of the N95 respirator masks that are used in the US. FFP2 masks filter 94% of airborne particles, at 0.3 microns and above, and offer the wearer excellent protection.
FFP3 masks offer more protection than FFP2. There are different types, sizes and models available with the latest FFP3 filtration technology. FFP3 masks filter 98% of airborne particles, at 0.3 microns and above, and offer the wearer the highest level of protection.
Both FFP2 and FFP3 face masks are available with and without a valve and can be helpful for those suffering from breathing issues as the valve allows tiny amounts of air to be expelled from the mask after filtering it, without letting any air in.
The Ultimo Safety Defender Series’ FFP2 and FFP3 range of valved and non-valved disposable masks have been designed for comfort and maximum protection against all kinds of particles that can be inhaled in most working environments. Working closely with wearers of respiratory protection in all types of industries has enabled us to design and develop quality products with the end user in mind.
To use FFP2 & FFP3 masks, all wearers must be ‘face fit tested’ to ensure that they can achieve a suitable fit for the mask, so that it operates at the required efficiency. It is a legal requirement that employees must be fit tested by a competent person. By completing a successful face fit test, the wearer can identify suitable RPE which fits and will offer adequate protection.
There are two types of face fit tests, qualitative and quantitative. Both tests match an individual’s face shape with a compatible mask, ensuring that a tight seal is achieved. Fit testing guidance states that employers should have a system in place to review when a repeat fit test is required. The recommended suitable interval for repeat fit testing is 2 years.
